Black, Brown and Vocal: The Trouble with Toxic Perfectionism
Group Talk with Felicia Lazaridou (English)
+++ For members of the Black community * +++
Research is beginning to suggest that racism in the form of unrealistic and strict demands can become internalized, in turn manifesting as toxic perfectionism. Those really high standards may become sources of pride, and also a great source of pain as the search for perfectionism is: a) unattainable, and b) never-ending. This creates a paradox between feeling superior in the course of pursuing one's ambition and feeling inferior at never achieving one's ultimate desire. Racism, in this sense, is a socially prescribed perfectionism (the belief that other people will only value you if you are perfect); and it may well be the most harmful form of perfectionism. Even if you have spent a lifetime chasing perfectionism, or it's something that you are only recently beginning to notice about yourself, this discussion group is for you.
In this session we will discuss how to break-free from unhealthy tendencies.
This group is open to all genders.
